About Our January Speaker

Our JCSTS community conversation kicks off by looking at a side of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's work that doesn’t always get enough attention. In her book, King of the North, award-winning author Jeanne Theoharris connects King’s work to the racial inequalities we’re still living with today. (A short sample read here).
These challenges show up in different ways across many communities and places today, and they remind us that the fight for justice has never been confined to one place or one moment. Through shared learning and reflection, we grow stronger and build resilience for the challenges in front of us. Most of all, this conversation invites us to engage the question: what now?
Jeanne Theoharris is our guest speaker. She is a professor of political science at Brooklyn College, part of the City University of New York. She earned her AB in Afro-American Studies from Harvard College and her PhD in American Culture from the University of Michigan. Jeanne is the author and coauthor of four books, along with many articles, focused on the Black freedom struggle and the ongoing politics of race in the United States. Her work brings history into the present and helps us better understand the forces shaping our lives today.
