About
A Call to Action: Beyond Civility to Radical Reconciliation The Certificate in Public Theology at Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary is a five-month, online course of study offered in a facilitated, cohort-based learning environment. This program is designed to equip faith-based leaders in the Christian tradition to become effective advocates and organizers for social justice. The course is structured to help Learning Partners explore the history of the Black Church and Black-led liberation movements while applying those lessons to the contemporary challenges of systemic oppression. By offering this course, JCSTS seeks to inspire transformation through a theology and practice of liberation deeply rooted in the traditions of the Black Church. Learning Partners will participate in a dynamic, facilitated cohort-based learning environment. Weekly online meetings with the Cohort Facilitator and peers will provide opportunities to share reflections on course assignments and related experiences. The course is divided into four comprehensive units: - The Legacy of the Black Church & Introduction to the Black Theology Movement - Underpinnings of Systemic Oppression - Racism-Dependent Oppressions in the U.S. in the 20th Century - Black-Led Liberation Movements & Constructing a Theology and Practice of Healing and Repair This program invites participants to move beyond civility to radical reconciliation, equipping them with the tools, insights, and community support necessary to engage in transformative justice work.
