UNIT II

The Divided Mind of the Black Church (part 1)

This video reproduces a lecture entitled, "The Divided Mind of the Black Church: Theology, Piety, and Public Witness," given by the Reverend Raphael Warnock, senior pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

In this lecture, Reverend Warnock explores the relationship between the black church and black theology. For the purposes of this learning experience, the lecture is broken into two parts: the first provides a basic overview of the topic and the second discusses four "moments" in the relationship between black theology and the black church.

As you watch this first part, think about the following:

What was the event or moment that brought black theology to the attention of many living in the U.S.?
According to this video, why is there a conflicted relationship between the black church and black theology? What is the nature of this conflict?

*** Estimated time to complete learning activity: 32 minutes (including time to pause the video to take notes) ***
