About Us

Who We Are

The Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary (JCSTS) mission is to advance communities of faith, justice, and compassion through innovation in theological education. JCSTS is one of the twelve theological institutions of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the only one that is historically African American.

Under the leadership of President Paul Roberts and the Board of Trustees, JCSTS innovated a new digital bridge of education competencies that expands leader capabilities and improves communities.  It brings revelations on the viral racialdemic of today’s Black Church USA and embodies the moral conscious of the nation, standing strong on the shoulders of its African descended ancestors, and mobilizing to advance the Beloved Community through the vital and life-giving message of Love, Justice, and Peace.

JCSTS is committed to growing and developing pastors and lay leaders who want to make positive change. The curriculum has flexibility with self-paced study areas such as:

  • Preaching and Social Change

  • Small Church Clusters

  • Christian Civic Engagement Mini-Course

  • Matthew 25 Curriculum Co-collaboration with the PC (USA)

JCSTS also offers these certificate programs:

  • Drum Major for Justice

  • Community Organizing

  • The Costen Institute for Worship Leadership (I, II, III)
