This course examines the pivotal history of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the foundational role religious institutions played in its realization. Participants will analyze how the Black Church served as a logistical and spiritual center for the Civil Rights Movement, mobilizing communities to demand federal protection of the franchise. The curriculum explores the theological motivations behind political activism, the legislative milestones of the VRA, and the periods of reauthorization and expansion. We will also address the contemporary landscape following significant Supreme Court decisions that altered the act, providing a strategic look at how modern faith communities can navigate the challenges of voter suppression and advocacy today.
