About
This course examines the liturgical practices and theological foundations of African-American Christian worship. Based on the teachings of prominent scholars (particularly Melva W. Costen, Ph.D.), the course defines worship as a response to a Sovereign God who continually invites people into deeper relationship and service. Participants will examine the historical, cultural, and theological foundations that shape worship in the Black Church. The curriculum addresses key aspects of worship including the spoken word, community rituals, and the use of music as a tool for deeper theological engagement. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the theological frameworks that sustain these traditions and learn how they serve as pathways for resilience and spiritual growth.
