This course explores the historical and theological foundations of hymnody, with a focus on its role in social justice and the Black Church tradition. Learners will examine the construction of sacred song, from strophic meter to lyrical content, while engaging with contemporary scholarship on inclusive language and global traditions. A key component of the curriculum involves analyzing the relationship between classical hymnody and modern praise and worship music, identifying points of departure in structure, theology, and intent. By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to evaluate and select congregational music that aligns with justice-oriented ministry.
